Green Wedding

Weddings are magical, the joining of two lives celebrated with friends and family is certainly not to be missed. But with this comes a lot of waste such as food, flowers, stationery and more. Match this with around 270,000 weddings in the UK every year and well over 30million weddings worldwide per annum you can’t even imagine the waste! No wonder people are going for a more green wedding.

Have no fear though as this article can give you 5 tips on how to reduce waste at your wedding.

So what is a green wedding? A green wedding, also known as an eco-friendly or sustainable wedding, is a celebration where the couple tries to reduce the event’s effect on the environment. These days, green wedding ideas are plentiful, with more eco-friendly wedding decorations on the market and greener options for catering, invitations, and more.

You can have a green wedding and also have an amazing day! Here are 5 ways to do that from engagement to the big day!

1. Engagement and Wedding Rings

Videos by Tone, how do you go green with the rings? Well it’s as easy as finding a second hand ring or even using a family heirloom. You can also ask parents or grandparents if they’d like you to use their rings for the wedding. They might really like the idea that what was just their wedding ring is now a family symbol.

You can also find a vintage ring which again lowers your environmental impact.  It’ll be unique and different to everyone else’s new ring. You’ll have something special to you and holds your core values true.

2. Eco-Friendly Stationery

Vendors are becoming more eco-friendly as time goes on which is obviously awesome. Using recycled paper/recyclable materials, up cycled fabrics, leather and wood. Some companies also give back to the environment like planting a tree with every order.

A company like Paper Chain Wedding Stationery uses recycled paper and packaging so they are definitely worth checking out!

3. Get married outside!

I spoke about eloping in a previous blog, and this is similar, but, you can invite lots of people and still share your day with friends and family. Of course it’s hard in the UK to judge the weather which trust me, this wedding videographer knows, but there are options to tackle this. You’ll save on energy which is great for the environment and your wedding film will look amazing as it will have all the natural light.

You could pick a venue like a national park which can help the conservation of the place or a beach which can fund they’re beach clean up.

4. Floral Decor

Flowers are my absolute fave to film. They can look incredible as you can see above which were provided by Rock and Wreath, they can look absolutely stunning! The way you can make eco friendly choices with your flowers is by choosing flowers/plants that are in season and ones you can even take home and keep as house plants.

Some florists, like Rock and Wreath grow their own flowers which obviously is great for a green wedding in the UK. She also keeps away from any single use plastic.

5. Food waste

This is such a big one for me and something I see all the time when I’m filming weddings. When it comes to large gatherings we will always see food waste. The buffet will be overstocked and we say ‘it’s better to have too much than not enough’. What you can do is donate the left over food to homeless shelters or food banks, but, make sure this is arranged ahead of time so that the food can be properly packaged and then sent off safely.
